Welcome to all you Pogues and Shane MacGowan fans. I created this page as a tribute and a source of current and past news on The Pogues, Nips, Shane and all other related things. I don't want to give a big spiel on the history of The Pogues I'll just say that they were one of the greatest bands around, and if you haven't heard of them go buy an album, or borrow someone else's, you'll thank me. Hopefully you'll get an idea of who they were from this site. To find out more about The Pogues and MacGowan check out the In Print section, where you can read about them and their various adventures. Or you can listen to some rare songs converted to Real Audio in the Sounds section. Be sure to stop by the new page added to the site, FrontPage Pogues. This page will have pictures of the various magazine covers which The Pogues and Shane MacGowan have been appeared on throughout the years.
The Pogues broke up back in August of '96, after more than a decade of turning out some of the best tunes around. However, the legend of The Pogues lives on through this website and a few other ones dedicated to them, the Nips and their infamous lead singer Shane MacGowan. Shane is still recording and performing with his new band, The Popes. They have previously released a full-length album entitled The Snake and the new album The Crock of Gold was released on October 27, 1997 in the UK. It is still only available as a UK import, however a German pressing of the album is planned to be released on the SPV label. The first single released prior to the album is Lonesome Highway which has the two B-sides A Man Called Horse and Joey's in America. The second single, Rock 'n' Roll Paddy has been released as of March 16th, with a B-side of She Moved Through the Fair.
Shane and the Popes played some terrific shows in the US and in Toronto, Canada during the month of June including all three stops on the Guinness Fleadh tour. They conquered New York, Chicago, Detroit, Denver, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Jose and many other towns along the way. Following the tour in the US and Canada Shane and the Popes are now back home in London and have some upcoming shows in Wales, Ireland, Hungary and France. The Popes have released a solo EP album entitled Are You Looking at Me... One thing Shane still needs to do is to getThe Crock of Gold released in the US, many fans are still having trouble getting a copy of it, and it would have helped if the album was in the stores while he was on tour. However, the latest news is that Shane MacGowan and The Popes are no longer represented by the ZTT record company and there is no word yet on them signing on to a new company. On a literary note, according to the November article in Loaded, Shane's new album gets its title and themes from the James Stephens book The Crock of Gold, which is a pretty good read, you should try and get your hands on a copy of it. Keep checking back for updates.

Quotes "I've had a very, very happy life. If they stuck me in a box tomorrow I'd know I've had a bloody whale of a time. How many other people have made loads of money and done every drug under the sun, and gone out every night, and been all over the world before they're 30. A few maybe. I'm one of the lucky few."--Shane "Writing a song is like taking a piss. It's a natural bodily function for me, I don't have to make a fuss about it" --Shane "For a penny-whistling trad band, they're as contemporary as gelignite...Theirs is pub music with a vengeance." --Village Voice "MacGowan has the poetic nature and command of language commonly ascribed to the Irish, and these tunes are lovely indeed...Singing with the grizzled authority of a wise old man who's seen more than he'll ever have time to tell. MacGowan manages to come off as consummate vocal stylist while remaining completely free of pretense or affectation." --Kristine McKenna, Los Angeles Times |
